Visiting Venice is like stepping into another world. When I got off the train and saw the grand canal for the first time it took my breath away a little and I even teared up slightly! I can see why it’s a bucket list destination now, and would recommend this dreamy location to you too!
Here’s all you need to know for your Italian getaway to Venezia…
how long should you spend in Venice?
Everyone will have different opinions on this one but this is what I found. I went for two nights and three full days, which was perfect. In this time we did exactly what we wanted to do, and weren’t TOO tired by the end of the trip. We did a lot of walking though, so by day 3 we felt if we were going to stay another night, we would have needed a more restful day, but all in all, I felt 3 days was enough to experience everything we wanted to.
when should you visit Venice?
March. From personal experience, I would say the end of March is the perfect time to visit Venice. It was just the right level of busy and the sun shone the entire time! I have never been in the summer so I can’t say from first-hand experience that it’s better in winter, but from all the people I have spoken to, it is a great winter/ spring destination. Also, I wouldn’t have wanted to be walking around with more people there than when I went, so I would recommend going outside of the school holidays. it also wouldn’t be nice in the boiling heat either in my opinion!
what to do in Venice?
- Embrace getting lost in the side streets
The first day of our trip we spent wandering around, absorbing it all, taking pictures and going from Aperol bar to Aperol bar – it was perfect really! We soon realised that we had to accept the fact that you’re going to get lost in Venice, so you might as well just embrace it! I would recommend having a day to freely wander around and just take in the beautiful city and the people within it.
2. Take the Vaporetto to colourful Burano
This was probably my favourite day! Take the Vaporetto to Burano Island and wander around this colourful gem. It’s like something out of a film! Beautiful, I would recommend having lunch here as it has a nice strip of buzzy restaurants.
TIP: if you’re going to Murano as well, head to there first as Murano will be a bit underwhelming after going to Burano first!
3. Take a trip to Lido Beach
Escape the hustle of the city for a little while and take a Vaporetto (water bus) to the beach
How to get there
From the Piazzale Roma, catch an ACTV Vaporetto to the Lido. It takes about 10 minutes
where to stay in Venice?
This one depends on how much walking you mind doing, but in general, staying near St Marks’s Square is never a bad idea. We were about a 10-minute walk from the square and it wasn’t a problem at all. So long as you’re not too far from the centre if you want to be going there for dinner in the evenings it’s really fine. Plus, you can use your Vaporetto tickets in the evening to get about, but figure out which port you need to get to in the daytime!
